Terminals are designed or rated for a specific cross-sectional area, for which the quoted voltages and currents apply. The manufacturer quotes this cross section as the "rated connection capacity". At up to 4mm², unless otherwise specified, the connecting points must be able to accommodate both rigid and flexible conductors of the specified size, along with the two next-smaller cross sections.
Connecting points must permit the connection of "unprepared conductor" e.g. according to DIN EN 60 999/VDE 0609 Part 1. This expression is used to designate a conductor, where the insulant at the end of the terminal has been removed. A conductor, whose shape has been adapted before the insertion in the terminal or whose cores have been twisted together to stiffen it, is regarded as unprepared.
